GP Public Schools and the Community

Yesterday was yet another wonderful reminder of just how integral, functional, and important the relationship is between the Grosse Pointe Public Schools and the community at large.  We started the day getting ready for the big GP Park Little League Parade – helping the kids build signs and such to decorate the cars that would carry their teams through the streets of the Park.

The parade winds through the residential neighborhoods and business districts, an annual event enjoyed by all.  The parade ends at Defer Elementary, home of four of the five baseball diamonds used by the Little League.  Most of the players are students in GPPSS schools, but plenty go elsewhere.  Would this all be possible if not for the great working relationship between the GPPSS and the Little League organizations across the Pointes?  It’s a wonderful symbiotic relationship that pays dividends for everyone.

We ended the day by going to see the GP South production of “Pippin” at the North Performing Arts Center.  While a minor emergency at home forced us to leave a little early (no worries, nothing serious) the scene at the PAC is always a sight to behold.  Parents and non-parents alike rightly rave about these productions that give our students a well-deserved sense of accomplishment.

Days like this encourage me to keep doing what I am doing on the Board of Education.  Like most fellow parents, I could not imagine this community without such thriving interaction.
